To fall in love with a wild creature is to put your heart on the wind. We will miss you forever Flaco. Fly Free. 2/24/24
Flaco symbolized so many different things to his many followers and admirers. His beauty, curiosity and grace were a storybook tale of hope, freedom and survival. But we all knew the dark side of his freedom and that fate came to be last night on Feb. 23rd 2024. Just slightly after one year in freedom our dear Flaco collided with a building or window and died. One may wonder was it better for this owl to be recaptured by the Zoo or stay free meeting the hazards of life on the wing.
Many would say he had a year of freedom and we had a mascot for NYC. What choices we made for this owl. I often wondered if Flaco was lonely as he hooted every night from the highest water tower on the upper west side. Maybe as he roosted in back alleys it reminded him of the bars at the zoo and maybe his hoots were not for a mate but a call of a lost soul looking for his way back home. By flying free he may have lost his way back to the zoo.
We all projected our lives into his and his ability to be freed, adapt and survive. It gave us hope and symbolized the hope within us that one day we would also be free of our constraints and we would fly free.
I am heartbroken □ at Flaco’s premature passing. When you fall in love with a wild creature you put your heart on the wind.
Fly free forever Flaco □
